Light it Up: 3 Ways to Increase Home Security

Reducing your home’s risk of being broken into is important all year round, but especially during the holidays if you’ll be away a lot. Taking steps toward improving home security is also a good way to boost your home’s value if you’re planning on selling it soon.
Here are a few ideas for securing your home and keeping intruders off of your property:
  • Use light timers to brighten up your home when you won’t be there. Set digital timers to have lamps turn on at certain times. You can also use these timers to have appliances, like your TV, come on from time to time to make it seem like someone’s home.
  • Install outdoor lights to discourage burglars. Consider using motion-sensor lights for your porch, driveway and yard. You can take your home security measures one step further by installing these lights all around the perimeter of your property. Set the lights to turn off after 30 seconds.
  • Get rid of places to hide. Keep trees, bushes and shrubs trimmed, so burglars won’t have anywhere to hide on your property. Your house might also be less likely to attract intruders if the yard looks like it’s well-maintained on a regular basis.
Increasing your home’s protection from intruders can help you and potential buyers feel more secure. This could translate into a quicker sale at a higher price.
